Welcome to WISK Karate and Jujitsu
At Western Illinois Shotokan Karatejitsu Club (W.I.S.K.), we inspire students of all ages—from 4 to 104—to embrace the art of Karate. Whether your goal is fitness, self-defense, or mastering martial arts as a sport, W.I.S.K. is here to guide you.
Our main discipline is Shotokan Karatejitsu, which combines the best of traditional Karate and modern techniques. We also offer training in Yamanaka Kojute Jujitsu, a formal style emphasizing grappling and close-combat skills. Together, these systems create a complete martial arts experience.
Understanding Karate and Jujitsu
What does the word "Karate" mean?
"Karate" (pronounced kah-rah-tay) means "empty hand" in Japanese.
It reflects the ability to defend oneself without the use of weapons.
What is Jujitsu?
Jujitsu (pronounced joo-jit-sue) is a close-combat martial art that focuses on grappling, throws, locks, and pins,
providing effective self-defense techniques for close quarters.
Our Unique Martial Arts Philosophy
What style of Karate and Jujitsu do we teach?
We teach Shotokan Karatejitsu, as envisioned by Sensei Gichin Funakoshi, the Father of Shotokan Karatejitsu.
Our Jujitsu training follows the Yamanaka Kojute Jiujitsu style, creating a balanced and powerful martial arts system.
Why is good form important?
Good form enables you to harness the full potential of your body, delivering maximum power and precision in every movement.
Do students receive a new rank every semester?
At W.I.S.K., ranks are earned through dedication and mastery, not automatically awarded. Our high standards ensure every rank reflects true progress,
promoting discipline and respect for the art.
Why test for rank?
Testing is essential for achieving physical and mental milestones. It builds confidence and sets clear goals for advancement in
Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring).
Why is Karate at W.I.S.K. non-contact?
Even beginner Karatejitsu students can generate significant force. Non-contact training ensures safety while still delivering the full benefits of Karate practice.
